We are happy to present our second annual grow along! I’ve seen over the years how much joy growing flowers can bring to people, and yet how hesitant some can be to grow. They’re afraid of getting it wrong, they don’t know where to start, and it can be a bit overwhelming. I’ve pared down 10 varieties of seeds that are very easy to grow (all can be direct seeded), need just a little bit of care, and produce the most beautiful abundance for our gardens and the pollinators.
First, a few notes:
- The first 4 people who purchase this gift will also receive a mini dried flower bouquet, to be picked up in Fair Haven. A pdf document can also be emailed to be given to the gift recipient.
- These packages are not mailed until late April/early May when it is safe to sow seed outdoors.

The second will be a check in to see how things are going, and also tips will be shared on how you can save your own seeds for the future. If you are unable to attend, these will be recorded.
Good Growing Tips document: A document with growing tips (to include watering, staking, pinching, feeding, and planting spacing) will be sent out to all participants.
Common questions:
Do I need any growing experience? None at all. I’ll guide you the whole way!
Do I need to have a garden? Not exactly. While growing beds are optimal, you can grow all of your seeds in pots on a back deck or porch. The corncockle and cosmos will need staking, so just be sure to have some long sticks and string to help them stand straight.
Do I need to have full sun? It is preferable, yes. Will you get the best blooms? Yes. But I’ve been able to grow all of these in medium sun as well, including part shade.
Are these deer resistant? That’s a good question. Even if some flowers are technically labeled “deer resistant”, deer can still nibble at them in curiosity, especially by baby deer who may not know what’s edible just yet. It’s best to have these on a porch or fenced in to be absolutely sure they won’t be nibbled on.
Will any of these plants come back next year? None of these are perennial but all can self-seed or you can save the seed for an endless future supply for your own library!

What is a Grow-along?
A grow-along is a wonderful way to learn to grow your own flower and veggies seeds with the help of a gardening mentor. So many books are available on growing and gardening, but in a grow-along, you can ask questions, receive support from a community of friends growing along with you, and expert tips on how to seed, grow, feed, mulch, water, and harvest amazing blooms for your home, friends and family, and to give as gifts.
Why grow flowers when I can get them from the store?
If you know, you know – there is something about growing from seed. I’m always in awe, and my heart always softens when I see a sprout come through the soil. We get to co-exist with nature, nurture it, see it grow, and it offers us peace and joy in return. In my estimation, it is one of the most powerful relationships you can have in life: us and plants.
Here are some more benefits of joining a grow-along:
1. It’s interactive: you’re part of a community that’s also growing along with you!
2. You get individualized attention and receive answers from a gardening mentor
3. Growing classes: Attend growing classes on zoom and learn best practices and tips on growing your best blooms
5. Variety: the flower seeds are varied in shape, color, and even harvesting so you can enjoy blooms all through the summer
6. Pollinator friendly: these seeds are especially picked to be pollinator friendly, in hopes of encouraging a positive and healthy ecosystem in your back yard.
7. Rare blooms: in your packet you will also receive dahlia tubers, which are often expensive and hard to find (sales sell out in minutes). You receive two of my favorite tubers to grow and enjoy, and build your own collection of tubers over time since they self-multiply. You will receive the one of the first tubers I’ve ever grown; these are very special to me. I hope they instill a love in your heart for growing flowers as they have for me.
7. Sustainability and eco-conscious: Consider how much you will save by not purchasing supermarket flowers that travel from various countries overseas, including the plastic they are wrapped in. Did you know that 80% of flowers sold in the US don’t come from America? Now you can grow them right in your own backyard!
